It’s a dream come true, finally. I don’t know why I waited so long… just proud of everybody, happy for my team, happy for my family, proud of myself… [happy for] and our partners involved. It’s a win for everybody and that’s what’s so important, we were able to accomplish that as a team.

Bubba Wallace on his first ever NASCAR Cup Series win.

“Let’s Go!!!” Those were the words that Bubba Wallace shouted when it was announced that he had won the GEICO 500 at Talladega. Wallace had taken the lead right before a weather delay. It could be called fitting that Wallace won at Talladega, his first win ever on the NASCAR Cup Series. Sixteen months earlier, he was embroiled in controversy when a noose was reportedly found in his garage. Law enforcement officials ultimately determined that the rope was not a noose, but that did not stop people from criticizing him. There was even criticism from then president Donald Trump. Wallace talked with the Radio BOSS Donal Ware about the win, whether he felt some vindication from the win at Talladega, about why he felt it was the right time to call for an end to the confederate flag at races, and about switching from Richard Petty Racing to 23XI Racing and working with Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.
