…Hockey has not always been the most diverse sport. I think we are definitely making strides now to increase diversity. I think it’s been a long time coming, but I think the hockey world is definitely ready.

Kelsey Koelzer on what it means to be the first Black ice hockey head coach in the NCAA.

Arcadia University ice hockey head coach Kelsey Koelzer is used to being in settings where she is the only Black person. In her four years as a student-athlete of the Princeton ice hockey team, where she was named an All-American and was a captain, she was the only Black player on the team. In 2016, the New York Riveters selected her first overall in the NWHL Draft and she became the first Black player to be the first overall pick in a professional North American hockey league draft. She has made history once again as the first Black head ice hockey coach in NCAA history. Koelzer talked with the Radio BOSS about what that means to hear, growing up playing hockey, her time at Princeton, her time in professional hockey and winning a championship, and buliding the Arcadia program from the ground floor.
